The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) is deeply committed to providing high-quality training for young people. With over 300 successful apprenticeships completed, the IPP offers a wide range of options to shape your professional future.

At the Garching campus, you can train as an Electronics Technician for Industrial Engineering, IT Specialist for System Integration, or Office Administration Specialist.

At the Greifswald site, the focus is on apprenticeships for IT Specialists in System Integration.

An apprenticeship full of voltage: Electronics Technician for Industrial Engineering

Location: Garching

Do you enjoy technology, hands-on work, and programming?

We offer a comprehensive training program guided by experienced instructors. In our training workshop, state-of-the-art electronics labs, and modern high-voltage specialist workshops, you’ll learn how to install and repair systems.

Start your career in operational technology. Gain knowledge in mechanics, electricity, circuit diagrams, PCB manufacturing, signal processing, assembling electronic modules, and programming control systems.

A team spirit, an interest in physics, mathematics, and computer science, plus a secondary school diploma, are the perfect prerequisites. If you like working on practical technical projects as part of a team, we look forward to meeting you.

An apprenticeship with complexity: IT Specialist for System Integration

Location: Garching & Greifswald

Are you looking for an inspiring work environment and hands-on learning opportunities? Start your apprenticeship with us and immerse yourself in the world of IT infrastructure. Discover your passion for IT systems, as well as their planning and configuration.

Our demanding IT environment, shaped by the unique requirements of large-scale experiments with around 1,500 virtual machines and 4,500 network participants, offers you a comprehensive and unparalleled training experience.

Your training will cover requirements analysis, conceptual design, hardware and software selection, installation, operations, and troubleshooting. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the entire hardware lifecycle.

To join us, you should have a good school leaving certificate (intermediate school certificate or high school diploma), a strong interest in IT, solid MS Office skills, and excellent German and English proficiency. Motivation, a sense of responsibility, service orientation, and teamwork skills complete your profile.

An apprenticeship with structure: Office Administration Specialist

Location: Garching

Are you ready for a commercial apprenticeship at a renowned science institute? Support science administration as you help explore new energy sources for future generations.

We offer a comprehensive training program with a strong commercial foundation. Develop your skills in office organization and workflow coordination across areas such as human resources, procurement, inventory, finance, controlling, and project work.

To join us, you’ll need a good school leaving certificate (intermediate school certificate or high school diploma). Solid PC and MS Office skills, as well as good knowledge of German, mathematics, and English, are also required. What matters most here are motivation, a sense of responsibility, strong communication skills, team spirit, and an attentive working style.

Step 1
Apprenticeships

Every year on September 1, we offer the following apprenticeship positions:

At our Garching location near Munich, we provide four apprenticeships for Electronics Technicians for Industrial Engineering, one for IT Specialist for System Integration, and two for Office Administration Specialist.

At our Greifswald location, one apprenticeship for IT Specialist for System Integration starts each year.

Step 2
Job Posting & Application

You’ll usually find the job postings for our apprenticeship positions on our job market starting from autumn of the previous year.

To apply, please send us your CV and a copy of your most recent school report. We’d also appreciate a brief note telling us why you’re interested in our institute. Submit your documents through the application portal using the provided link. For data protection reasons, we can’t accept applications via email.

Step 3
Interview & Trial Day

After the application phase is complete, we move on to the selection process and invite you to an on-site interview. It’s important that you come well prepared and bring along all your questions so you leave the conversation fully informed.

Step 4
Start & Duration of Apprenticeship

At the institute, we have dedicated full-time trainers in each field who will support you throughout your apprenticeship with high-quality guidance. We take the time to nurture your curiosity and help you grow.

The apprenticeship typically lasts 3 to 3.5 years, but almost all of our trainees achieve such strong results that they are able to shorten their apprenticeship to just 2 or 3 years.

Step 5
What comes next after your apprenticeship?

After graduation, you can work with us for six months. There is a very good chance that you will then receive an offer for a permanent position.

If starting your career with us doesn’t work out, our high-quality training will give you excellent opportunities to secure a position at other companies or institutions.
